Seeing Impressionism: Europe, America and the Northwest

Place: Gallery C
Date From: 10/15/2011
Date To: 2/25/2012
Summary: Majority of works are from the Tacoma Art Museum permanent collection, including works by Degas, Glackens, Pissarro, Renoir, Cassatt, Sargent, Hassam, Ingres, and others, including artwork from MAC permanent collection and other local collections. French Impressionism is characterized by loosely brushed, sometimes dissolving, forms; unblended colors; scenes of contemporary life, particularly leisure activities, in the city and countryside. There is often the desire to capture on canvas a fleeting personal experience of a particular moment in time. Impressionism is amongst the most recognized and beloved of the art movements and coupled with its narrative imagery is a perfect medium for visitor-centered interpretation through Visual Thinking Strategy conversations.
Description: From the permanent collection of our Washington Art Consortium partner Tacoma Art Museum come works by Degas, Glackens, Pissarro, Renoir, Cassatt, Sargent, Hassam, Ingres, and others. You'll also see artwork from MAC and local collections. French Impressionism is characterized by loosely brushed, sometimes dissolving, forms; unblended colors; scenes of contemporary life, particularly leisure activities, in the city and countryside. There is often the desire to capture on canvas a fleeting personal experience of a particular moment in time. This exhibition was carefully chosen to thank Spokane and the MAC donors for a successful Leonardo da Vinci project. Educational Goals: Impressionism is amongst the most recognized and beloved of the art movements and coupled with its narrative imagery is a perfect medium for visitor-centered interpretation through Visual Thinking Strategy conversations. (Based on the research of Dr. Abigale Housen's Aesthetic Stages of Development.) School partnerships will be with Roosevelt and Linwood Elementary through Spokane Public Schools.
