The Glass of Wine

The Glass of Wine - Painting
Accession #: 2491.1
Title: The Glass of Wine
Object Type: Painting
Participants:
Physical Description: Oil on canvas painting of two figures, a man and a woman, near a staircase with another building in the background.
Description: The Glass of Wine is an early example of the formal painting style that dominated in Europe for more than 500 years. Artists were trained to paint highly finished historical, religious and mythological scenes using geometry to create the illusion of space. Little is known about Johannes Natus who joined the Middleburg Guild (southwest Netherlands) in late 1661 or early 1662. Allegory paintings like this one were a common form in the Netherlands. Dogs usually represent fidelity. A wine glass tipped toward a lady can indicate an illicit proposition.
