The Rainbow

The Rainbow - Painting
Accession #: 3112.1
Title: The Rainbow
Object Type: Painting
Participants:
Physical Description: Oil on panel; pastoral scene with clouds, mountain, rainbow. Cattle in foreground.
Description: Like their European counterparts, pre-impressionist American landscape artists made highly realistic, often idealized portraits of nature. Working outdoors they recorded a library of natural scenes which they would mix and match in the studio to make paintings that evoked decidedly American themes: discovery, exploration, and settlement. George Inness, one of America's foremost 19th century landscape painters, is frequently compared to the famous Barbizon School painter and father of French Impressionism, Camille Corot. Inness became a major leader in America's Tonalist movement which, influenced by the French Barbizon School, emphasized mood and shadow.
