Black Opal

Black Opal - Painting
Accession #: 3113.1
Title: Black Opal
Object Type: Painting
Participants:
Physical Description: Nighttime landscape of dark foliage surrounding a hazy moon.
Description: American Ralph Blakelock, largely self-taught and unaided by a European tour, seemed to anticipate Impressionism by experimenting with light and flattened perspective. Heavy, rough paint layers interspersed with almost transparent "glaze" create a shimmering affect for which Blakelock became known. Ralph Blakelock, a radical artist for his time, was best known for woodland scenes that capture the moment when night overtakes twilight. His images of dark trees silhouetted against moonlit skies seem to be the very beginnings of modern painting.
