Biography/History: | Born in Bulgaria, Veliku Ivanov followed his brother Frank to Spokane around 1910, and began using the name King Evanoff. He was trained as a tailor in Bulgaria, but worked to build Idaho’s Taft Railroad Tunnel before opening a tailor shop in the town of Malden. Business did not thrive there, and Evanoff moved to Spokane. He made uniforms for the Union Pacific Railroad, as well as clothing for customers of all types until the shop closed during the Depression. Spokane’s Bulgarian community was small but connected. King met and married Anna Stevens, also from Bulgaria. Their first son John trained himself in engineering and put his youngest brother Lawrence through the University of Washington architecture program. Their middle son Steve died during an incident with labor union thugs during construction of the Centennial Mills grain elevators in 1939. |
