Physical Description: | Hammond typewriter with Bulgarian type on a wooden base and with a wood case. |
Description: | From his Riverside Avenue shop in Spokane, tailor "King" Evanoff used this Cyrillic keyboard typewriter to communicate with his homeland and local Bulgarian immigrants. Like Evanoff, many single men immigrated and worked as laborers before sending for their families. Manual labor was plentiful: building railroads, logging and sawmilling, wheat harvesting, and, during population booms, building construction. As the pace of business also increased, the typewriter's mechanized writing process made it an essential business tool until computer word processors appeared in the late 1980s. |
