Biography/History: Marion Lorraine Blanc was born in Spring Valley, WA in August 1915. Her family moved with the railroads until finally settling in Spokane in the 1920s. She completed training at St. Luke's School of Nursing, attended classes at the Spokane Art Center and was a Red Cross nurse. During World War II she was stationed in Spokane at Baxter Army Hospital, in California, and the Pacific theatre. Marion was called up as an Army Nurse in 1941. She left for New Guinea with the 47th General Hospital on a converted ocean liner called the Monticello, and served several years until illness (malaria or dengue fever) sent her to military hospital in Texas. After the war, Blanc moved with her family to Republic, WA where she served as Ferry County Public Health Nurse for twenty years. She was the first female charter member of a VFW post in the country.
