Last Name: Cutter
First Name: Kirtland Kelsey
Dates:
1860 - 1939 (Life/Active Dates)
Biography/History: Kirtland Kelsey Cutter left his East Rockport, Ohio home to study at the Art Students’ League in New York City and in Europe before beginning an architectural career. In 1885 he arrived in Spokane Falls and landed a banking job with the help of his uncle, Horace. When bank president James Glover selected Cutter to design an Eighth Avenue home in 1888, the architect’s career was re-born. After fire devastated the city the next year, Cutter and partner John Poetz designed many commercial buildings that replaced the burned out blocks. Later, Cutter joined with Karl Malmgren to design mansions for men who made their fortunes in mining, timber, railroads, and the banks that financed them. Cutter’s residential and commercial designs, including the Davenport Hotel, put his artistic stamp on the skyline of the growing city. As his reputation grew, his commissions extended to Seattle and beyond. In 1923, Cutter relocated to Southern California, where he continued residential design work.
