Physical Description: A box of drafting tools and drawing or artists implements. A metal box (11a) with a wood grain look, gold line border, red and gold inner border on the lid, and a clip latch; inside are four compartments holding artist supplies. On the inside center of the lid is painted "KC." The artist tools inside the box include: a porcelain palette with multiple wells (11b), a small metal protractor, "Dietzgen" (11c), a small bottle with cork lid (11d), a wooden pen holder and nib (11e), a tapered wood pen holder with crow quill nib (11f), a Hunt's crow quill pen holder and nib (11g), a small wooden knife (11h), and a wooden handle (11i). Also associated with #3001 are two drafting rulers, (one is three-sided) and a paint brush, both are too long to fit into the metal box.
Description: Spokane's renowned architect, Kirtland Kelsey Cutter, used this metal watercolor box in his work. The box contains a porcelain tray with multiple ink wells and drafting tools, with Cutter's monogram initials inscribed on the lid interior. At a time when successful businessmen showed off their wealth through the architecture of their homes and workplaces, Kirtland Cutter's residential and commercial buildings reflected Spokane's "economy, power structure, social life, and changing times." Comfortable using a variety of styles, Cutter expertly blended the romantic and the classical, giving Spokane a new architectural face that attracted and impressed visitors and residents alike.
