Crescent Department Store

Name: The Crescent (Firm)
Biography/History: Robert Paterson founded the Crescent department store in Spokane, opening its doors the day after the city's devastating 1889 fire. The store recorded many firsts in local retailing, including the first escalator between Seattle and Minneapolis. The store was known not only for its excellent service, but also for its holiday window displays and its clock - Spokane's unofficial landmark and meeting place. The store merged with Marshall Field and Company of Chicago in 1975. Seattle's Frederick & Nelson purchased the store in 1988 and soon closed it.
