Biography/History: | Inez Hill Bailey was an artist active in Spokane for several decades. Initially trained in Boston, MA and Duluth, MN, she relocated to Spokane around 1930 where she studied with Maude Sutton and at the Spokane Art Center and with Worth McCoy and George Laisner. Her Influences include the German Expressionists, Kirchner and Nolde, French artist Rouault and American artists Thomas Hart Benton, Lyonel Feininger and Marsden Hartley. She exhibited in group exhibitions nationally including: Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition of Northwest Artist, 1958 National League of American Penwomen, Washington D. C. (First Prize) Seattle Art Museum, Northwest Annuals, 1940s-1960 Northwest Watercolor Society, 1950s (Seattle Art Museum) Frye Art Museum, Seattle Painters and Sculptors Society, Jersey City, NJ Oakland Art Museum Pacific Northwest Art Exhibition (7th Annual) 1950, Spokane, (First Prize) 7th Annual Adirondack Exhibition, Saranac Lake, NY, 1960, (Honorable Mention) El Paso Art Association Denver Art Museum Watercolor Society of Alabama Mt. Vernon, Illinois National Art Exhibition Springfield Art League Memorial Exhibition Spokane Art Center, 1963 Besides her activities as a painter, Bailey was Head Surgical Nurse for Edgecliff Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Spokane for many years, until she retired in 1961. She was a Charter Member for the Spokane Chapter of the American Penwomen and was a member of the Washington Art Association.
