Biography/History: | George, Inness was born in 1825 near Newburgh, N.Y. He sold his first painting when he was 16 years old. In 1843, he studied briefly with French artist Regis Ginoux, who encouraged him to look to the old masters for inspiration and guidance. He studied for two years in Italy and in 1854, he travelled in France and saw the paintings of the Barbizon School. In the 1860's he became a follower of Emmanual Swedenborg, an 18th Century scientist, philosopher and theologian who regarded God as a direct revelation of nature. From then on, Inness found direct spiritual experience in nature. During the last decade of his life, Inness's work became more and more free, taking on an impressionistic spontaneity, which he used to further express his religious convictions. He was elected to the National Academy in 1868, and during his life he painted in the United States, Italy, France, and other European countries. |
