Biography/History: | German immigrant and farmer Gustav Stelljes, along with his older brother Georg, a goldsmith, arrived in New York City in 1872. Gustav (b. 1857; d. after 1940) may have tried his hand as a grocer in the 1880s, but took up dressmaking by 1897. About a year later he married Theresa [Gerl?] (b.1864; d. after 1940), who had arrived in New York from Austria/Bohemia around 1885. By 1900 Gustav’s occupation was “Ladies Tailor.” He listed regularly in City Directories as a dressmaker at different locations, but by 1910 he and Theresa, both dressmakers, moved their home and business to 1318 Madison Avenue. There they remained, apparently for the rest of their lives, referring to themselves variously as tailor, robes, and dressmaker. At ages 82 and 75, they completed the 1940 census forms, listing themselves as dressmakers; their death dates are unknown. |
