Biography/History: | The Society was founded in 1896 for persons living in Spokane County who lived in the state of Washington, Oregon, Idaho or Montana prior to November 11, 1889. A second organization, Sons and Daughters of Washington Pioneers, was formed in 1933. The two groups merged in 1969 and disbanded in 1975. The Society placed a number of historical monuments around Spokane County to recognize significant locations and/or events during the pioneer days. The name of the Society varies over the years: Spokane Pioneer Society, Spokane County Pioneer Society, Spokane County Pioneer's Society, Spokane County Pioneers' Society, Spokane Pioneer Association, and Spokane County Pioneer Association. |
