| Biography/History: | Dixy Lee Ray, democrat, also a former museum director and member of the National Atomic Energy commission, was elected first woman governor of the state of Washington in 1976. She defeated republican John Spellman. In the 1980 election for governor Dixy Lee Ray again ran for governor against John Spellman and this time was defeated by him. |
