Biography/History: Dr. Orville Clyde Pratt was Spokane's Superintendent of Schools from 1916-1943. Dr.Pratt was born in Marion, Indiana in 1873 to Joseph and Madora Hawley Pratt. In 1876, Orville’s only sister, Gertrude, was born and that same year, Joseph died. At the time of the 1880 census, Dora Pratt and her children were living with her parents Eli and Mary Jacoby Hawley. Orville Pratt attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he earned a doctor of philosophy degree. He began his career as the principal of the high school at Danville, Indiana from 1895 to 1897. On 1 July 1899, he married Martha C. Riley in Marion. A year later, their son and only child, Reginald, was born. From 1897 to 1911, Orville Pratt was superintendent of schools in Clinton, Indiana. In 1915, he was the head of education at DePauw University. Around 1916, the Pratt family moved to Spokane, Washington, where Dr. Pratt assumed the position of Superintendent of Public Schools. Over the course of his career, Dr. Pratt wrote numerous articles on education and was the author of the book History of Spokane, and he was active in national and state education associations. Dr. Pratt died in Spokane in 1954.
