|
Physical Description: | This quilt has twenty-five pieced blocks set on the diagonal, alternating with plain blocks. The blocks are made of green, unbleached white, and red print cotton fabrics. The alternating plain blocks and the border are of the same unbleached white fabric. The plain blocks are quilted in one of two ways: either a feathered wreath or grid design. The border is quilted in a feather design. The binding was folded over the edge and sewn by machine. A flour sack print can be seen in the border. |
Description: | Dr. Orville Clyde Pratt, Spokane's Superintendent of Schools from 1916-1943, preserved this quilt, made by his great-aunt around 1876. This unnamed quilt maker was a widow, originally from Pennsylvania, who lived with various relatives in Indiana and paid for her "keep" by making quilts for them. |
