Biography/History: | Marion Moos was born in Spokane in 1923 and has spent her adult life working to improve life in our community. She graduated from Washington State College in 1947 with a degree in sociology. She then married Gene Moos and moved to his family farm in Edwall, WA. Marion became active in the Women’s Division of the United Methodist Church. She began to travel to national meetings and to study civil rights as head of the Social Relations committee of the United Methodist Women’s group in her community (info from Ginny Moos). It was at one of these meetings, held in New York in 1970, that Marion was introduced to the women’s movement (Lindy Cater, 1985). Marion was a founding member of the Spokane Chapter of the National Organization of Women as well as a founding member of the United Nations Chapter of Spokane. From 1973 – 1977 Marion ran the Past-Time Feminist Bookstore in Spokane. In 1977 Marion attended the Washington State Conference for Women in Ellensburg, followed by the International Women’s Year Conference in Houston. These conferences were to devise a plan of action for women’s rights. The Ellensburg Conference turned into quite a story when the organizing committee learned that 2000 unregistered conservative women would show up at the conference starting the next day. Marion was on that organizing committee. There is a long list of committees and organizations that Marion has been instrumental in forming and working on. Some of these include the Older Women’s League, the Spokane Human Rights Commission, YWCA, Founder’s Circle of Women Helping Women, and the Eastern Washington Area Agency on Aging. Marion has worked for civil rights and social justice for all citizens and continues to this day. |
