Biography/History: John Harrison Happy was born in Spokane, Washington on1 April 1895 to Cyrus Happy (1845-1938) and Minna Prickett Happy (1854-1939), both from Illinois. John had three siblings, Claudine (Kaufman) (1880-1968), Eloise (Richards) (1886-1951) and Cyrus P. (1888-1965) John Happy served in the U. S. Army in World War I. He took his 1st Officer’s training in April 1917 at the Presidio in San Francisco. He reported for duty May 13, 1917. In August 1917, he was commissioned 2nd Lt. in the Cavalry and reported for duty at Fort Lewis the same month. He was recommissioned 2nd Lt. in the Artillery and assigned to the 316th Ammunition Train 91st Division. He left for France in June 1918, where he served until May 1919. He was discharged as a 1st Lt. Artillery on May 31, 1919. Upon his return to Spokane, John worked as a bank clerk. He married Ruth Rogers in 1925, but the marriage ended in divorce. He married again in 1929 to Marjorie Brazeau. The couple had two children, son John Harrison Happy, Jr., born in 1930. Their daughter Marcia Lee was born in 1934, but she died at the age of eight in 1942. In 1925, John Happy established his own insurance firm. When his son joined the business, the company name was changed to John H. Happy & Son Insurance. In 1946, John Happy ran for State Senate representing the 6th District. He was considered a spokesman for conservative Republican wing of the state government. He was planning to run for re-election in the fall of 1962, but he died of a heart attack in a Coeur d’Alene hospital on June 21, 1962. He was survived by his wife Marjorie, son John Happy, Jr., brother Cyrus, and sister Claudine Kaufman.
