Physical Description: World War I issue steel helmet has spruce tree insignia, center, front and "91." Helmet surface is textured , painted a dark green and soiled. Interior has a leather headband with rubber inserts to absorb shock and a net with cord inside for adjustment and a tag reading "Tighten cord and adjust net to fit head." Helmet has a leather chin strap and felt pad in crown.
Description: John Happy served in the U. S. Army in World War I, taking his first officer's training in April 1917 at the Presidio in San Francisco. He reported for duty May 13, 1917. In August 1917, he was commissioned 2nd Lt. in the Cavalry and reported for duty at Fort Lewis the same month. He was recommissioned 2nd Lt. in the Artillery and assigned to the 316th Ammunition Train 91st Division. He served in France between June 1918 and May 1919 and was discharged as a 1st Lt. Artillery.
