Biography/History: Wilmer Evers was born 26 February 1920 in Spokane, Washington to John C. Evers, a worker with the Northern Pacific Railway (1887-1973) and Gertrude (Gertie) M. Campbell (1889-1963). Wilmer had two older siblings, Mildred F. Evers (Green) (1911-1959) and Richard Lavern Evers (1913-1986). In 1940, Wilmer Evers appeared in the Spokane City Directory as a student living with his mother and brother, but on 18 June 1941 he enlisted in the Army. He entered service on 7 May 1942 as a private and was assigned to the 440th Ordnance Company (Aviation), 19th Bombardment Group (Heavy), V Bomber Command serving the Southwest Pacific Theater, based in the Philippines. Wilmer was taken prisoner by the Japanese and held at PW Camp #2-Davao at Mindanao, the Philippines. Records indicate that he was admitted into an unidentified hospital in February 1944 with malaria and internal hemorrhage, where he died on 16 February 1944, listed as “died as a prisoner of war.” He was interred at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial at Fort Bonifacia, formerly Fort William McKinley in Manila, the Philippines.
