Physical Description: Gold Star mother's pin is two pieces, attached pendant style. Blue rectangle with gold star has pin on back; blue, heart-shaped pendant drop is decorated with flower and inscribed "Son Died In Service" and hangs from pin by 3 interlocking clear plastic chain links.
Description: This Gold Star Mother's pin was given to Gertrude Evers of Spokane after her son, Wilmer Evers, died in service during World War II. Private Evers was assigned to the 440th Ordnance Company (Aviation), 19th Bombardment Group, V Bomber Command serving the Southwest Pacific Theater and based in the Philippines. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese and held at Camp #2-Davao at Mindanao. Records indicate that he was admitted to an unidentified hospital with malaria and internal hemorrhage and that he died on February 16,1944 as a "prisoner of war."
