Biography/History: Frederick O. Ellis was born February 8, 1891 in Colfax, Washington to William S. and Eva Ripley Ellis. Ellis was sworn into service with the U.S. Army Cavalry in St. Louis, Missouri on February 17, 1913 and was soon transferred to Fort Yellowstone, Fountain Soldier Station, Wyoming. He was transferred between Monterey Bay and San Francisco in 1914-15 as part of the California 1st Cavalry, Troop G. He returned to Colfax in 1916 after 3 years of active service; he was called to duty at the Presidio of San Francisco in July of that same year as a Corporal, marksman - sharp shooter, and spent time in Texas, Arizona, and Kansas between 1916 and 1918. In 1918, at Fort Riley, Kansas, Ellis graduated with a near perfect score in horsemanship and was noted as demonstrating "excellent character." In 1919 he was transferred to Scofield Barracks, Honolulu, and was honorably discharged on February 16th, 1920. Frederick Ellis died at Sawtelle Veteran's Hospital in Los Angeles, California on July 16, 1940. (Information provided by family c1973)
