Physical Description: Wool jacket or tunic, olive drab, has patch pockets with flaps at chest and hip, both sides. No lapel; hooks and eyes at collar and at bottom front edges of coat. Body of coat is lined with a slick, probably synthetic fabric; sleeves are lined with cotton fabric. Coat has metal US Cavalry insignia button at the collar and small US Army buttons on epaulets, pockets and front closure. There is an inside pocket at front, left.
Description: A Whitman County resident, 22-year-old Frederick Ellis enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1913 and was assigned to 1st Cavalry, Troop G on a three-year enlistment. When his enlistment was up, he was furloughed to the Regular Army Reserve on 20 July 1916. Until 1 March 1917, he was with Troop G, 17th Cavalry, then with the Supply Troop, 17th Cavalry until 8 October 1919. He was furloughed again to the Regular Army Reserve until his honorable discharge on 16 February 1920, after which he farmed with his parents in Whitman County.
