Biography/History: | Peter Barnabas Barrow was born into slavery in Virginia. He fled to freedom and marched with Sherman to the sea during the Civil War. He ended up in Vicksburg, Mississippi where he served in the State Legislature during Reconstruction. He and his family came west in 1889, first homesteading at Deer Lake, where he joined the Farmers’ Alliance of Washington. The family later moved to Spokane. Barrow was nominated as presidential candidate on the Populist ticket, and was a Fusion party candidate for state Legislature from Spokane County’s Fourth District. Reverend Barrow helped found the Calvary Baptist Church and served as its pastor from 1895 to 1904. To provide a lasting opportunity for blacks, he organized the Deer Lake Irrigated Orchard Company, a black-owned apple orchard project on his Deer Lake homestead. |
