Description: The Deer Lake Irrigated Orchard Company printed a broadside advertisement using this copper letterpress plate, mounted on a wood block. Peter Barrow, Jr. and his brother Charles founded this black-owned business on his homestead in 1910 to provide area African Americans a business ownership opportunity. Though the African American population in the Inland Northwest has not historically been large in number, it is a strong community with a unique legacy. African Americans have called this region home since around the 1890s, primarily settling in urban areas after the coal mines at Roslyn shut down. Persevering against discrimination and preserving their culture, they successfully started black-owned businesses and social organizations, established two Spokane churches central to the African American community, became community leaders on social and political levels, and worked at a variety of occupations.
