Biography/History: | Susan (Susane or Suzann) Margareta Stumpf was born in Warenburg, Privalnjoe, Samara, Russia on 30 April 1842 to Johannes Stumpf and Katharine Margaretha Hartwig. She married Henry (Heinrich) Jacob Arnst (1844-1920) from the same place; his parents were Henry Philip Arnst and Clara Margaretha Werner. The Arnst family, including son John Jacob (J.J.) (1872-1950), emigrated to Nebraska in 1899, then moved as "pioneer farmers" to Ritzville, WA in 1901. They lived for eight years "in the country on the Arnst homestead" before moving into Ritzville; the 1910 census lists the family on Hemlock Street. The (1910?) census also lists the families as German speakers. Susan's husband Henry died in Ritzville in 1920; Susan died there on December 11, 1928 at the home of her son, J.J. Arnst. Family history says that Susan made this work quilt for "Henry Arnst," which could have been her husband or her grandson. The family history also dates its making as 1881-82 (in Russia) and says that Susan gave it to her grandson Henry Arnst (1900-1927), born to J. J. and Mary Christina Arnst in Nebraska just before the families moved to Ritzville. She could have made it for her husband, and given it to his namesake upon the husband's death, or at least before her grandson's death in a 1927 combine accident. |
