Fangs, Fur & Feathers: The Art of Animals

Place: Davenport Gallery (Gallery E)
Date From: 7/1/2016
Date To: 9/4/2016
Summary: This "castle-inspired" spectrum of life exhibit showcases some of the amazing diversity of life. More than 300 specimens, from leaches to terrestrial giants, are grouped together in a three-thousand square foot spectacular display of species. In this engaging exhibition, works of art from the 13th century through the late 20th century include tigers, birds, horses, sheep, monkeys, bears, and more and are mixed with an amazing array of animals from the museums natural history collection from the Old Campbell House Museum days. Perennially popular as an artistic theme, animals have been depicted in works of art since pre-historic times. Many of the works drawn from The Reading Museum's collection and other privately held collections include etchings, engravings, lithographs, sculptures, oils, bronzes, taxidermy and watercolors that depict the tremendous variety of the animal kingdom. Many outstanding artists are featured, including Francisco José de Goya, John James Audubon, Titian Ramsay Peale, Peter Moran, and Antoine Louis Barye. Animals are seen in their natural habitat, and most appear as pure specimens with an eye toward scientific accuracy and documentation. Approximately fifty works featuring mammals, birds, and other creatures, both domestic and wild, will be included. Due to the rapid deterioration and advanced age of the remaining taxidermy collection, this may be the last time visitors will get to gaze upon the amazing study specimens in the museum's holdings. Several community animal and pet events throughout the exhibition will take place on weekends and visitors are invited to bring a baby picture of a family pet to post in the hall of animal babies.
