Physical Description: | Rug beater with wood handle. Handle has steel loop a one end for hanging. Four heavy wires are variably twisted and interwoven in loop patterns to create the rug beater head and a twisted wire stem that inserts into the wooden handle. There is an old repair to the beater head with cloth tape. |
Description: | Late 19th century interiors grew increasingly cosmopolitan, often combining both domestic and foreign objects, such as arts and crafts from un-industrialized countries. Oriental rugs became extremely popular, both for aesthetic reasons and because central heating made wall-to-wall carpets less critical for warmth. Area rugs were considered easier to clean, but the maids at Spokane's 1898 Campbell House relied on hand-operated carpet sweepers and this rug beater for regular housekeeping. |
