Wire Rug Beater

Wire Rug Beater - Beater, Rug
Accession #: 3991.1
Title: Wire Rug Beater
Object Type: Beater, Rug
Participants:
Physical Description: Wire whip, flat head looped and woven with four wires mounted on wooden handle. Wire loop at end of handle secures and provides hanger.
Description: Late 19th century interiors grew increasingly cosmopolitan, often combining both domestic and foreign objects, such as arts and crafts from un-industrialized countries. Oriental rugs became extremely popular, both for aesthetic reasons and because central heating made wall-to-wall carpets less critical for warmth. Area rugs were considered easier to clean, but the maids at Spokane's 1898 Campbell House relied on hand-operated carpet sweepers and this rug beater for regular housekeeping.
