Physical Description: Brown velvet dress, front of which is decorated with green, blue and rust thread outlined with gold seed beads. Has a low waist, gathered on sides, with a pleat in the back. Overskirt from side to side.
Description: The characteristic style of 1920s women's clothing first appeared in evening gowns. The extremely popular, Basque dress or Robe de Style shaped the belled-skirt of the previous decade into a straighter silhouette joning it to a tubular bodice with a dropped waist, hanging down to a mid-calf or ankle-length hemline. Throughout the decade evening dress styles set the pace for day wear, like this brown velvet dress. Its basic shape mimics early evening wear, and its embroidery reflects the influence of Art Deco, Cubist, and African Art movements on fashion.
