Physical Description: Bag front only, fully beaded with buckskin handles and beaded ties. Background is medium blue with pictorial rendition of a man holding a feather and a woman holding a cup. Three is a flag staff with eagle feathers in the center. Bag front is unfinished at edges.
Description: Collector "Chappie" Dunning nurtured a lifelong appreciation of the first people of the Columbia Plateau. Her friendships grew as she studied the craftsmanship, artistry, and unique skills of their hand work — and purchased, traded and received gifts of fine baskets, beadwork and clothing. In 1962 Dunning gave 1156 objects to the people of Washington State, choosing the Eastern Washington State Historical Society to care for them. Museum director Richard Conn termed it "the best single collection of local Indian material in existence."
