Physical Description: Bartending - Thomas, Jerry "The bar-tender's guide; how to mix all kinds of plain and fancy drinks. New York: Dick & Fitzgerald (1876) 107 p. Front flyleaves bear names of Jake Goetz and Harry Baer. It belonged to Sadie Baer (Mrs. Harry Baer).
Description: With profits from grubstaking (financing) Idaho gold prospectors, "Dutch Jake" Goetz and partner Harry Baer opened a saloon and gambling house in downtown Spokane Falls - just in time to lose their business to the 1889 fire. Their next venture - the Coeur d'Alene Theater (later, hotel) at Front and Howard streets, which provided the "four B's"- bed, board, booze, and betting. Goetz died in 1927. Baer lost the hotel to foreclosure with the onset of the Great Depression, became despondent, and in 1932 committed suicide after watching as a neighboring family was evicted from their home. Baer's wife Sadie kept this Bartender's Guide, a souvenir of the Coeur d'Alene Hotel.
