Accession #: 4326.1
Title: Goetz and Baer Tankard
Object Type: Tankard
Participants:

Goetz, Jacob (user)
Physical Description: Small, lidded ceramic tankard marked "Goetz and Baer / Spokane / Washington"; made in Germany by Villaroy and Boch.
Description: With profits from grubstaking (financing) Idaho gold prospectors, "Dutch Jake" Goetz and partner Harry Baer opened a saloon and gambling house in downtown Spokane Falls - just in time to lose their business to the 1889 fire. Their next venture was the Coeur d'Alene Theater (later, hotel) at Front and Howard streets, which provided the "four B's"- bed, board, booze, and betting. Goetz died in 1927. Baer lost the hotel to foreclosure with the onset of the Great Depression, became despondent, and in 1932 committed suicide after watching as a neighboring family was evicted from their home.
