Physical Description: Gold tinted silver tennis trophy and black painted wooden stand. The trophy is engraved on both sides and has two handles. Front of trophy is engraved "Spokane Tennis Tournament, 1st Prize, Gentleman's Singles, 1911." On the back of the trophy, is engraved "City Championship, won by H. C. Sootheran." The stand is turned wood painted black.
Description: A University of Toronto graduate, Henry Clare Sootheran came to Spokane, Washington on an alien status as a clerk for the Bank of Montreal in 1909. In 1911, the 26-year-old won first prize in the inaugural Spokane City Tennis Tournament in the Gentleman's Singles Division. For this, he received a handsome silver trophy. Henry left Spokane after 1912, probably returning to Toronto.
