Physical Description: | This is a "Log Cabin, Pineapple variation" quilt, constructed by sewing pieces to a foundation fabric and then folding them over. It is made of brilliantly patterned silks in blue and gold tones. It shows both machine and hand work. The 18" blocks are in a 3 x 4 setting. The gold borders serve as the binding. The top and bottom borders are 5 1/2 inches. The side borders are 8 - 8 1/2 inches. It is tied in yellow wool yarn from the back, but the yarn does not come through to the front. The backing is blue satin. |
Description: | Mathilda Anderson worked in Spokane as a "finisher" at The Crescent department store (possibly in its fur department) from about 1900 to 1920. She pieced this "Log Cabin, Pineapple variation" quilt top using fabric scraps collected at work. Her sister-in-law Johannah (Hannah) Anderson, a dressmaker in Great Falls, Montana, completed the quilt. |
