Physical Description: | This predominate colors in this double cloth coverlet are rose, navy, and white. It is woven in a geometric design, with blue "snowball" motifs. "Pine tree" motifs fill the borders. It was constructed by sewing two woven panels together by hand. There is fringe on one end, and the other end is hemmed by hand. |
Description: | This doublets coverlet was most likely woven by a professional weaver and highly valued by its owner, Sarah Jane Farmer Ellis. Sarah Jane was born in 1805 in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Family history states that the coverlet was made for her in 1830. As a widow, Sarah Jane, along with seven of her children and two grandchildren, traveled from Iowa to Walla Walla County, Washington, by wagon train in 1862. |
