Pine City Quilt Top - Quilt
Accession #: 4402.1
Title: Pine City Quilt Top
Object Type: Quilt
Participants:
Physical Description: Patches from a variety of fabrics, including many woolens, were sewn down to backing fabric to make this crazy quilt. The seams were embellished with maroon or brown/gold embroidery. Some blocks are inscribed with embroidery. Inscriptions include "Pine City", "Sweet Home" and "1894". The edge is not bound.
Description: When she made this quilt top in 1894, fifteen-year-old Ida Starkey embroidered her name and her Pine City, Washington hometown into its design. One hundred and twenty-three years later, her granddaughter used the embroidered information to locate cousins whom she had never met. Ida was born in Switzerland in 1879, immigrated to Washington state in 1888, and married Joseph F. Pasold in 1901. As a young woman, she worked at Spokane's Pacific Hotel and, later, at the Davenport Hotel. Ida passed away in 1971.
