Description: | Swimming pools, top-name entertainment acts and amusement park rides lured throngs of Spokane-area residents to Natatorium Park on the north side of the Spokane River. Beginning in 1889, as many as 500,000 people danced, picnicked, laughed and screamed each year at "The Nat." Chief among its attractions was the carousel built by master carver Charles Looff and presented as a 1909 wedding gift to his daughter, a Spokane resident. When the park closed in 1968, manager Bill Oliver joined a campaign to save the carousel; he died on its steps just after it began operating again in a new Riverfront Park location. |
