Physical Description: Mirror and case. Case conforms to shape of hand mirror with handle. Upper surface and edges of lid of case, as well as edges of bottom, are of black lacquer with design in gold leaf. Mirror of polished metal on one surface, molded bronze (tree decoration?) on back side. Metal handle wrapped in thin bamboo strip, tip wrapped in orange thread.
Description: The mirror and case are part of the lacquer vanity set (also including 812.10 and 812.12). In Japanese (Romaji) this set is called "Kyodai" according to Michiko Takaoka, former director of the Japanese Cultural Center Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute. When the mirror is set upon the easel in display the bottom end of the mirror should be pointed to the right. The Miss Tokushima doll was used as part of an international doll exchange to promote goodwill between Japan and the U. S. This doll is 1 of 58 doll ambassadors sent by 2,610,000 Japanese school girls in those Primary Schools and Kindergartens which had received one of the 12,739 Doll Messengers of Friendship sent to Japan in the spring of 1927 by thousands of American children and young people. The Friendship Doll exchange was coordinated by the Committee on World Friendship Among Children, which was instituted by The Commission on International Justice and Goodwill of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America. This particular doll represents the Tokushima prefecture on the island of Shikoku.
