Physical Description: | Female doll, 35 inches tall with straight black hair (human hair), representing the Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku in Japan. The doll is dressed in orange silk kimono with tree design in blue, with undergarments of red and green silk, and an Obi of embroidered silk. The doll's skin is "gofun", which consists of many layers of a material made from powdered shell. The doll wears "combi" underwear, a white cotton shirt/pants combination. Generally children wore them, never dolls. The doll has two sets of red silk underwear under the kimono. The one next to the combi is a tied skirt called an "okoshi". Over this is the "hadajuban" which is like a light kimono. These two are "chirimen" silk. The obi "jime" is a cord tied in a special knot in the center of the large obi. The obi "age" is a red and white shoken silk cloth tucked into the top of the obi. The doll wears "tabi", the white cloth foot coverings worn with sandals. Dolls normally never wore these, only children. |
Description: | In the spring of 1927, thousands of American children sent dolls to Japan as messengers of friendship. In return, Japanese school girls sent 58 exquisitely-dressed porcelain dolls, complete with tea ceremony accoutrements, to American states and cities. Miss Tokushima, named for a prefecture (state) on the island of Shikoku, is the Washington state doll. Although many dolls were destroyed during World War II, the survivors have played a healing role. In 2011 Miss Tokushima traveled Japan in a series of exhibits reuniting dolls from both sides of the ocean. |
