| Description: | William W. Powell arrived in the Inland Northwest in 1910 and established a lumber operation that later became a match manufacturing company. Powell married Spokane socialite Helen Campbell in June of 1917, shortly after the United States entered World War I. Six months later, he joined the U.S. Army's 20th Engineers Forestry Division where he applied his skills as a lumber mill owner. William wore this campaign hat while serving as 1st Lieutenant in France until 1919. |
