Biography/History: William W. Powell arrived in the Inland Northwest in 1910 to operate a lumber company. Powell's lumber manufacturing operation turned into a match manufacturing company that made him a successful businessman before he reached the age of thirty. Powell married Spokane socialite Helen Campbell on June 27, 1917, shortly after the United States entered World War I. Six months after they wed, William joined the 20th Engineers Forestry Division where he applied the skills he had gained as a lumber mill owner to the battlefield. William served in France until 1919 and when he returned home he was greeted by his wife along with their first son, William Junior, who was born while he was overseas. W.W. Powell and Helen Campbell Powell had three sons, William W. Powell Jr. (June 5, 1918 - June 1982); Allan Campbell Powell (Feb. 22, 1920 - Jan. 5, 1944) who gave his life in the Second World War as a 1st Lieutenant. John White Powell (July 18, 1925 - March 25, 2012).
