Physical Description: | Eighty-four blocks are set on the diagonal in this quilt. They are "Log Cabin" blocks made of strips of fabrics, most of which are solids, except for a few prints. The blocks are surrounded by black triangles on the sides and corners. There is a border of (mostly isosceles) triangles in a variety of colors, which alternate with pieces of black fabric, providing a scalloped edge. |
Description: | Catherine Gifford - known to her family as "Katie" - may have made this eye-catching "Log Cabin" quilt in New York State during the 1870s. Its bright triangle border and scalloped edge demand attention, and it is easy to see why Katie would have brought it with her when she moved west. Katie and her husband, Elihu, farmed in Latah, Washington, for many years. |
