Physical Description: Men's black silk top hat with grosgrain ribbon around the brim and around the base of the crown. The top hat is medium height with curved sides, a brim that is turned up sharply on the sides and edges, and trimmed with black faille. The interior hatband is dark brown leather and the hat is lined with white moiré and silk.
Description: Chauffeurs in very wealthy families wore specially-designed uniforms, but the Campbell household required that Joseph Gladding, their chauffeur from 1898 to 1905, wear only a black suit and top hat when driving their Victoria, Phaeton, or Brougham. Gladding's top hat came from New York City through Webber the Hatter in Spokane, Washington. Inside its crown is stamped in gold, "J. GLADDING."
