Biography/History: Joseph Gladding grew up on a large farm near Youngstown, Ohio, operated by his father George. He also learned to train horses by watching the Walter L. Main circus at its winter quarters in nearby Geneva, Ohio. Gladding married Anna Sinkler c.1893; their son, Robert, was born in 1894 or 1895. Anna Sinkler may have died; by 1900 Robert was living with his grandmother and remained in Ohio for his lifetime. During the late 1890s, Gladding met Amasa B. Campbell on one of Campbell’s visits to his Youngstown hometown. Gladding agreed to work as coachman for Campbell in Spokane WA, and on June 5, 1898, just at the Campbell family moved into their new home (with carriage house) at 2316 West First Ave, Gladding arrived with three Cleveland Bay driving horses and a Shetland pony that Campbell had purchased from his Youngstown friend, Henry Wick. Gladding worked for the Campbells for seven years, caring for the horses and carriages and transporting the family, particularly their daughter Helen, to school and other activities. He also taught Helen to be a skilled equestrienne, and while the Campbells were in Europe in 1904, he trained the dog and pony to do tricks in a small circus ring next to the stable. On Apr 30, 1904, Gladding married his 2nd wife, Nora Moriarity, who was working as a cook, possibly at Campbell House. In December 1905 they left the Campbell house to open and operate a furniture store on North Monroe St. until about 1920; after that, Gladding managed his mining and real estate investments until his death in 1944.
