Title: | Interior With Maroon Sofa |
Object Type: | Painting |
Participants: | |
Physical Description: | Oil on canvas depicts a figure with crossed legs and wearing a hat sitting on a maroon sofa in a yellow room that is empty except for a campfire that burns on the floor and a giant grasshopper perched on the back of the sofa. Smoke from the campfire exits through a window. |
Description: | Washington-based Gaylen Hansen paints tall tales using a recurring cast of quirky characters inspired by the critters and "charms of the Palouse." The Kernal is Hansen's alter ego, an intrepid explorer who saunters throughout the artist's wildly imaginary work. He encounters colossal grasshoppers, devious moonlit dogs, gargantuan trout and other larger-than-life characters. "Knowing all the hazards of life and all of the tragic things that can happen, I think it's okay to create a sense of enchantment," says Hansen. "If I can do that from time to time, it's great." |
