Accession #: 4234.19
Title: History
Object Type: Sculpture

Physical Description: Ceramic sculpture consisting of a mottled tan colored three peaked hillside-shape with off-white protruding two-pronged ceramic objects [bones?] sticking out randomly over the area. There are two topsy-turvy blue and rust colored houses resting one on each of the outer two peaks. The center peak is two pronged and has a narrow opening (like a vessel). The texture of the hillside is extremely rough and crackled. Both of the houses have windows that allow the viewed to see all the way through the house, and rust-colored chimneys.
Description: Excerpt from Dennis Meiners' artist statement for 'History' in 2002 - "'History' was one of the last in a series of 'Mountain' pieces, that were the culmination of a number of years of making large sculptural slab built pots, two dimensional in nature, that were based on utilitarian pottery. I used those sculptural pots to explore texture and form in order to speak of issues that concerned me at the time I was working. 'History' was made around the time of the Persian Gulf War, an event that profoundly troubled me, and for which I felt sure we would be held accountable. Also I felt that our war action and the terror we rained down on the people of Iraq would eventually come back to us in kind. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people have died there because of what we did. No one gets away with that kind of behavior, and we haven't. Unfortunately the ruling cliques in both the U.S. and Iraq continue in power, assuring that there will be much more violence and loss of innocent life. Pursuant to that, I am still making pieces with upside-down houses, and it helps me to think I might be doing something positive, I look forward to the day when the houses will be right-side up."
