Physical Description: Dress is medium grey. Gray silk/satin underdress has sheer hemstitched silk organza overlay. Second overlay is gathered at the waist and swings asymmetrically to one side. This layer is decorated at edge with metallic soutache braid embellishment and pearl cotton in a wheel-like motif. Bodice is of a fine net sewn into a camisole shape and gathered. Shawl collar descends to waist; dolman sleeves and collar are also edged with the decorative wheel motif. Substantial satin cummerbund wraps loosely at waist and is decorated with a small bouquet of ribbon flowers at the closure; cataloger speculates that this feature may have been added later.
Description: Helen Campbell's custom-made party dress by Eugenie of New York City telegraphs her family's social status while hinting at the looser styles of her freer generation. Coming of age during the early 20th century, Helen lived on the cusp of social and technical liberations like voting and driving, which transformed women's lives.
