Physical Description: | Pair of German or Bavarian small, bisque dolls with brown porcelain eyes, all bisque bodies, hinged limbs and painted features including black shoes and brown socks. The girl doll is wearing a straw hat on her head with flowers on the hat, a long green skirt with a lace over apron, black top with white sleeves, fine features, and long blonde mohair braids. The boy doll is wearing a small black felt hat with red fringe, a red vest with gold buttons, a white shirt with gold buttons, and cream lederhosen with gold buttons and brown suspenders; he has short blond mohair curls. |
Description: | Like many young well-to-do girls of her time, Helen Campbell (1892-1967) enjoyed collecting dolls representing different countries, like this Swiss or Bavarian pair. Popular fascination with world exploration grew through the 19th century. Wealthy families took Grand Tours of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, including the Campbell's visits to Egypt and Europe in 1904 and 1909-1910. |
